Radio Ikhlas - Week 6

The last day at Radio Ikhlas for 2012, which means the last time I need to get up at 6am for a while. During the breakfast show I read thw travel and weather three times, plus chatted on air to Shabana about Christmas in Derby.

Shabana told me she used half the questions I sent her last week and was impressed with my research. This week I am researching crime in Derby because Shabana has a seargent coming in to be interviewed. I gave Christmas cards to Tanvir and Shabana, plus gave a small donation to the Ikhlas Charity.

Radio Ikhlas - Week 5

I do the work experience from 7:30 where I read the travel updates and weather 3 times during breakfast show, plus we talk about how the recession affects students. Shabana has started teaching me some Urdu so that I can understand more of her show and say some phrases on air. At 9am I check over the articles I've written then went onto researched budget cuts at Derby City Council because Shabana has an interview with a councillor on Monday. From the research I wrote a few questions to help as a starting point to the interview.

When I get home I emailed the articles and research / questions to Shabana, so now I've got to wait and see what she uses.

Radio Ikhlas - Week 4

My fourth week at Radio Ikhlas where I was reading travel updates and weather 3 times during breakfast show. From 9am till 11 I did university work for my work experience module, then I started writing articles for the Radio Ikhlas quarterly newsletter. The first article is about diabetes and a recipe reducing risk of diabetes, this is because Asian people are at a higher risk of getting diabetes (some of the article is below). Then the station manager asked me to write an article about herbal tea and the health benefits.benefits.

Diabetes:
The United Nations estimates the number of people globally affected by diabetes to be 246 million and approximately half of those are in Asian countries. Globally, Diabetes is ranked as the fourth leading cause of death, in terms of disease.

In the UK, about 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. According to doctors at the University of Korea in Seoul, 194 million Asians were diabetic in 2003, a statistic that could soar to 330 million by the year 2025.

Radio Ikhlas - Week 3

This week I started coming in at 7:30 which is when the breakfast show starts, this entails getting up at 6am but will be worth it for the experience I gain. I get to read travel updates and weather twice during breakfast show, we also talk briefly on air about travelling. This gives me more to do and more experience of working on air. Shabana reads moral stories on air, some weeks she explains them to me so I get a better understanding of the show. She regularly gets requests from listeners, she did try to get me to answer the phone but because the show is in Urdu people ring in talking Urdu so I can't understand them.

I have UDSU training so only work till 9am this week.

Radio Ikhlas - Week 2

This week I start at 8am. I get to introduce myself to the listeners plus I read the travel updates and weather once during the breakfast show. From 9am till 11am I do research into the Islamic calendar and new year (below is some of my findings). I next do university work for the module and then have lunch with Shabana. She has made two homemade currys with chutney, we go into town for naan bread and she shows me the area.

Islamic Calendar
The Islamic calendar (or Hijri calendar) is a lunar calendar; it still has 12 months but is based on the motion of the moon. The new month starts when the lunar crescent is first seen after a new moon. This calendar is 11 days shorter than a solar year.

15th November 2012 is the start of the new Islamic year, this date is called 1 MuHarram 1434 A.H. The next Islamic year starts on 4th November 2013. The Islamic calendar is ahead of the Gregorian calendar, it will be many years till the two calendars coincide. 1st May 20874 will be 1 Jumada al-awwal (Jumada I) 20874 A.H., will be when they coincide.

Radio ikhlas - Week 1

I am starting work experience at Radio Ikhlas in Derby for my Work Based Learning module at the University of Derby. Before I started I had a brief meeting and look around the radio station with the manager Tanvir. you can find out more and listen to Radio Ikhlas here.

On my first day I get to the radio station at 8am to sit in on the breakfast show and Shabana the presenter tells me more about the station whilst the songs are on. This show is mostly in Urdu which makes it interesting for me, I do understand some of the show such as the news as names don't get translated. Shabana is also in charge of admin at the radio station and will be teaching me about this during my time there.

At 11am myself and Tanvir went through what I’ll be doing during my time at the radio station and started filling in the learning contract. Next I helped Shabana with finance work for the radio station which has to be done precisely because it is part of a charity organisation.

Starting Social Media Internship

I've started on the Social Media Internship at the University of Derby, initially we thought about what we wanted from the course.

I would like to learn how to further my career in the radio industry, by finding out what other tools are available to me other than the usual mainstream ideas. I want to do this so that I can find other ways into the industry other than making normal job applications. Whether this is making connections with people or companies by networking or anything else.

Sammi & Annie on D:One - First show

After a brief interview with members of the D:One committee we got the go ahead to start our radio show, I will be doing it with my coursemate Annie every Tuesday 3 - 5pm on D:One. You can listen live here. 

We came in early to plan the first show at 2:30; we came up with a few features and rough plan of the show. We're going to talk about current news, events and other interesting things we've found. The two features we started off with are the 'Akinatoi' and 'Two truths one lie'.

I also made us a Facebook page so that listeners can join in with our features, you can find us here. Today was our first show and we'll be on air every week till the end of the semester.
